Way back then, during our elementary and high school days when facebook, twitter or instagram were not yet out there, we were already exposed to different kinds of “social networks”. For instance, we have our neighborhood, the kids and adults outside our house who we play with and chat with when we are off from studying. We also have our school. All of our classmates and schoolmates are the people that we are interacting with, and we usually have our own small group which we consider as our friends. And from these different sets of friends, there is someone whom we consider as our best friend.
What is a Best Friend anyway? According to UrbanDictionary.com, “Best Friends are very special people in your life. They are the first people you think about when you make plans. They are the first people you go to when you need someone to talk to. You will phone them up just to talk about nothing, or the most important things in your life. When you’re sad they will try their hardest to cheer you up. They give the best hugs in the world! They are the shoulder to cry on, because you know that they truly care about you. In most cases they would take a bullet for you, coz it would be too painful to watch you get hurt.”
It is surely easy to determine who our best friends are during those times. Whoever we hangout with the most, whoever knows our secrets and stories, we automatically consider them as our best friend. But in this day and age of online social networks where we are acquainted with different sets of people, did you ever wonder who might be our online best friends in facebook, twitter, or Instagram?
The application Instrack was introduced to me by some of my friends from Instagram. It is an app that keeps track of your followers in IG. It determines who just followed you (uuyyy), who did unfollow you (grrrr), who don’t follow you back (snobs!) or who you dont follow back (hi fans! 😀). One of the paid feature of this app is the “Best Friends”. This feature generates a Top 20 list of your IG friends which, the app says, are your IG Best friends. The criteria on how the list was put together is not in my knowledge. Perhaps the most likers, or who always leave a comment on your posts, or who secretly visits your gallery or it’s just random? I really dont know.
Constant liking or commenting is not enough to be deemed as a “best friend”, in my opinion. But one thing is for sure, it is not impossible to find a best friend on Instagram. With the help of Igersmanila’s Instameets and other events (and other IG groups as well), we met a lot of people from Instagram whom we now consider as our friends. We all started as strangers online, meet and greet each other, form groups and create our own chatrooms, then get to know each other everyday. Relationships become much deeper as we personally discover the people behind those IG usernames and IG galleries. They may not be the best friends that the Instrack app might tell you, but what important is they’ll live up the true meaning of a Best friend, online and offline. And with that, we will be forever grateful. 🙂
Come join us and as we celebrate @IGersManila’s 3rd anniversary and who knows, you might find a best friend there.
